Walk out to your lead tech’s truck. The TPMS light has been on in it since the second Obama administration. He owns the relearn tool. It is in his box, twelve feet from the truck. The light is still on.

That is TPMS service in one picture, and it explains where the money goes better than any price list.

Here is the thesis, up front. TPMS service is two jobs. Most shops bill one of them.

This one is written for the owner or the group operator, not for the person searching why a dash light came on. It covers what the service pack actually costs, why the relearn is the half that disappears, and the federal rule that turns a declined sensor into a documentation event instead of a lost sale.

Pull ten closed tire tickets and most of them carry exactly one TPMS line. Usually a small per-wheel charge. Sometimes nothing at all, because the whole thing vanished into “mount and balance.” The part got priced. The work got donated.

That is not a pricing philosophy. It is a missing line.

What “service TPMS system” and “TPMS service required” actually mean

Two different dash messages, two different jobs behind them.

A low-pressure warning means the system is doing precisely what it was built to do. A tire is low. Air it, find the leak, close the ticket.

“Service TPMS system” or “TPMS service required” is a fault message about the monitoring system itself. A sensor battery at the end of its life, a sensor that never got relearned after a rotation, a module that lost an ID. That message needs a tool and a technician, and that is the billable one.

(TPMS stands for tire pressure monitoring system. At the front counter it stands for “the light is on again.”)

The TPMS service pack is a part, and it is the part everybody forgets to bill

A TPMS service kit is not glamorous. Valve core, cap, seal, nut. Four items that will never headline a vendor’s spring promotion.

It is also the cheapest hardware on the invoice. Tire Shop IQ, a tire-shop operations blog, published a piece in March 2026 that puts real numbers on it. It says a TPMS service kit (valve core, cap, seal and nut) “costs somewhere between $3 and $6 per wheel”, that “charging $8 to $12 per wheel as a line item on the invoice is reasonable,” and that “on a four-tire job, that’s $32 to $48 for a service.”

Treat that as one operator’s published position, not an industry benchmark. It was also the only page I could open that carries a per-wheel figure at all.

The same article argues against charging “$25 or $30 per sensor when no sensor replacement is needed,” because that “will get you a bad review and lose you a customer.” I am quoting a source arguing against overcharging on purpose, since that is the version your customer can go check.

Now the part that matters for your chart of accounts. A TPMS service pack is a part. It goes on the parts side of the ticket, at a cost you can look up, inside the same matrix thinking as everything else you buy and resell. It does not belong inside your consumables fee. The shop supplies charge post settles that argument in one line: put a $14 bottle of dye in a cooling system and that is a part, so bill it as one. Same rule here. I am not re-litigating it.

One distinction worth naming once. A statutory tire fee is money the state sets and often money you remit, a different mechanism with its own post on tire disposal fees. Nothing on this page is a fee. Both halves of TPMS service are prices you set.

The relearn is labor, and that is where the margin went

Here is the arithmetic that reframes the whole line.

Accounting firm Paar Melis’s 2025 benchmark report, built from client shops’ actual 2024 financials, puts the average shop labor rate at about $165 an hour. The 2026 Ratchet+Wrench survey’s most common posted band sits in the same neighborhood, so $165 is a fair input.

Now I need a time. I am choosing this number, not measuring it, so treat it as illustrative and substitute your own: call it 0.3 hour of added labor across four wheels to swap the packs, reseat, rebalance, and run the relearn. Some jobs are faster. Plenty are slower. (If your honest answer is “we have never timed it,” that is also a finding.)

Read those last two rows next to each other. The labor most shops never bill is worth roughly twice the gross profit of the part they did bill. Twelve minutes at $165 is $33, which is the entire low end of the pack line by itself.

So the pack line was never a labor charge. If it is the only TPMS line on your ticket, your relearn is free.

Scale it, still illustrative. Twelve four-tire jobs a week at 0.3 hour each is 3.6 hours. At $165, that is $594 a week, or about $29,700 a year on a 50-week year, all of it labor with no line to sit on. Some of that is genuinely inside tire labor you already sold. That is exactly the question worth asking: was it priced in, or just absorbed? If your tire package was built before TPMS existed on your ticket, you know the answer.

Then there is the harder half. The relearn is also the operation most likely to go sideways. A sensor that will not learn. A battery at the end of its life in a sensor nobody proposed replacing. A vehicle that wants a drive cycle before it will settle. That time is real, it is on your lift, and it has no home on the invoice.

This is the same disease as unbilled diagnostic time, and it lands in the same place: the gap between the rate you post and the rate you capture. When the relearn stops completing and the tech starts chasing which corner is lying, you have crossed out of a service and into diagnosis, which has its own fee and its own defense. Neither of those arguments gets rebuilt here.

One note on published numbers. The most recent trade article I could find on TPMS sensor replacement cost and shop profitability, dated April 9, 2026, prints no dollar figure at all. No price, no labor time, no margin percentage. So when somebody hands you a confident national average for TPMS service, ask where it came from. I went looking for that number and came back with a warranty term and a validation count.

TPMS diagnostic service tools all do the same three things at the bay: read the sensor, program a replacement, and run the relearn.

Autel’s own store lists the MaxiTPMS TS508WF at a “Limited Sale price $279.00” against a regular price of $319.00, and states it includes “Lifetime Free Update and One Year Free Warranty.” That is manufacturer-direct pricing, and prices move, so check the page before you budget.

Sit that next to your other equipment decisions. A machine for the newer refrigerant is a four-figure line. A key programming platform is four figures plus a credential with fees attached. This one is $279, and it gates the service you touch more often than either of them.

Which is the point. The reason the relearn goes unbilled is almost never the tool. The tool is in the box. Nobody put a line on the ticket for what the tool does.

You cannot hand it back with the light on, and that part is federal

This is where TPMS stops behaving like an upsell, and it is the reason this page exists instead of another cost guide.

Here is my one strong opinion on the whole line. Stop calling TPMS an upsell. A customer can decline a sensor, but nobody can decline the rule that governs what you are allowed to hand back, and a job where the shop carries the obligation is not an upsell. It is a service you have been pricing badly.

One: the statute. Under 49 U.S.C. 30122(b), a “manufacturer, distributor, dealer, rental company, or motor vehicle repair business may not knowingly make inoperative any part of a device or element of design installed on or in a motor vehicle or motor vehicle equipment in compliance with an applicable motor vehicle safety standard prescribed under this chapter…” The section carries a narrow exception for equipment the business reasonably believes will not be used again, which is not the tire counter. The same section defines a motor vehicle repair business as “a person holding itself out to the public to repair for compensation a motor vehicle or motor vehicle equipment.” That is you, on your sign, in your own words. I am not going to quote a penalty amount, because the page carrying the text does not carry one.

Two: the interpretation. NHTSA’s Chief Counsel, O. Kevin Vincent, addressed TPMS directly in a letter dated November 22, 2011, which the tire retailer Les Schwab hosts publicly. It says a repair business “would not be violating 49 USC 30122(b) by removing an inoperative or damaged TPMS sensor and replacing it with a standard snap-in rubber valve stem”. Then the caveat that matters: a repair business “that goes on to make any other element of the TPMS system inoperative, for example, by disabling the malfunction indicator lamp, would violate the ‘make inoperative’ provision.”

Three: wheels and tires. The same letter states that “a service provider would violate the ‘make inoperative’ prohibition of 49 USC 30122(b) by installing new tires and wheels that do not have a functioning TPMS system.” Leaving the lamp lit does not cure that. Turning the lamp off makes it worse.

Now the operational conversion, which is the useful part.

A customer declining a sensor is not the end of the conversation. It is a documentation event. Here is the version I would put in front of an advisor.

What the advisor says: “The sensor at the left rear is dead. I can replace it, or I can put a standard rubber valve stem in that position. If we do the valve stem, your monitoring system is not complete and the dash light stays on. What I am not going to do is turn the light off.”

What goes on the repair order: the dash message recorded at check-in, which position failed and how you confirmed it, what you recommended, the price you quoted, the decline in the customer’s own words, the employee who took it, and a note that the warning lamp was lit at delivery.

What the shop will not do, in writing, as policy: disable the malfunction indicator lamp, pull a bulb, code the light out, or install wheels with no functioning system and call the job complete.

One caution about the paragraph you just read. It rests on a single federal statute and a single agency interpretation letter written in 2011, which is older than a good number of the cars in your bay and much narrower than the question “what am I allowed to do.” It says nothing about your state’s inspection rules, nothing about how your insurance carrier sees it, and nothing about what somebody’s attorney does with your repair order three years from now. NHTSA publishes its interpretation letters, so read the one closest to your situation, and have your own attorney read your decline language before it becomes a canned job in your shop management system.

Where the TPMS line goes wrong on the invoice

Three failures, and none of them are dramatic on a single ticket.

1. The pack billed as a supply instead of a part. This is the tidy-looking mistake that makes two numbers wrong at once. A real part cost gets buried inside a consumables fee, so your supplies recovery reads high and your parts cost reads low. Set the supplies charge for what it actually covers and let the pack be a part.

2. Sensors bought for a job and never sold. The advisor orders four sensors, the customer approves two, and the other two go in a drawer. Nobody stole anything. Nobody wrote anything down either. Call it $60 a sensor for the arithmetic and use your own cost: two drawer sensors is $120 that left your bank account and never reached a repair order or a return. Twice a month across four stores is a number you would notice if it arrived as one invoice.

Every purchased part deserves an ending: sold, stocked, returned and credited, or used internally. A sensor in a drawer has none of those.

3. The sensor that never went through the matrix. A low-cost, high-frequency part is exactly where a flat markup quietly underprices, because the percentage that works on a $400 compressor does not work on a $60 sensor. That is a matrix question, and what a fair parts markup percentage looks like by cost band already covers it.

The one TPMS number a group operator should see every month

If you run more than one store, you do not need a TPMS audit. You need one ratio and one rate.

TPMS revenue divided by tire jobs, by store. Both halves included: pack line plus relearn labor. That gives you dollars of TPMS per tire job, which is a number a district manager can hold in their head.

Then the decline rate, by store. How often a recommended sensor gets turned down.

Read them together and they interrogate each other. Two stores that differ by a factor of two on the first number have either a pricing difference or an advisor difference, and the second number tells you which. Low dollars with a low decline rate means the price is too small or the labor line is missing. Low dollars with a high decline rate means the conversation at the counter is not happening. A store with an unusually high decline rate is also the store where somebody should confirm the declines are being documented, because that one carries liability and not just margin.

Put both numbers on the monthly report. Whoever writes your tire packages decides whether TPMS service installation shows up as its own line or disappears, and that decision should be visible to you.

Four counts, one afternoon, no purchase order

No purchase required. Pull the reports and count.

  1. Pull your last 30 closed tire jobs. Count how many carry a TPMS line at all.
  2. Of those, count how many carry two lines, a part and labor, versus just one.
  3. Total your sensor and service pack purchases for 90 days. Compare against billed TPMS parts for the same 90 days. The gap is either inventory, a drawer, or a return nobody credited.
  4. Open five repair orders where a customer declined a sensor. See whether the decline is written down anywhere a stranger could follow it.

Steps one through three are margin. Step four is the one with liability attached, so start there if you only get through one.

Three of those four steps are not a software problem

Limits first, because that is the honest order.
